Rising Maritime Security Crisis in the Gulf: India Summons Senior US Diplomat Following Attacks on Indian Crew Vessels

India has summoned a senior US diplomat following multiple attacks on Indian crewed commercial vessels in the Gulf of Oman region. Three incidents in four days, including a deadly strike killing three sailors, have raised serious maritime security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz corridor and intensified diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Washington.

In a significant escalation of diplomatic concern over maritime safety, India has formally summoned a senior diplomat from the United States Embassy in New Delhi following a series of attacks on commercial vessels carrying Indian crew members in the Gulf region. The developments come amid growing instability in key international shipping lanes near the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.

According to sources from the Ministry of External Affairs, the US Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks was summoned and issued a strong protest by Additional Secretary for Americas Nagaraj Naidu over repeated incidents targeting merchant ships with Indian sailors onboard. This marks the second formal engagement between India and the United States on the issue within a single week, reflecting New Delhi’s escalating concern over maritime security.

Over the past four days, three separate commercial vessels with Indian crew members have reportedly come under attack in waters near the coast of Oman, triggering alarm within the Indian government and maritime community. The incidents have unfolded in one of the world’s most strategically vital maritime corridors, responsible for the movement of large volumes of global oil and cargo shipments.

The first incident involved a suspected attack on an oil tanker, which subsequently caught fire. All Indian sailors aboard the vessel were safely evacuated without casualties. In a second and more severe incident, another merchant vessel carrying Indian crew members was targeted, resulting in the deaths of three Indian sailors, an event that deeply shocked the maritime sector and raised serious concerns about safety protocols in the region.

A third incident was reported shortly thereafter involving another vessel near Oman’s maritime zone, carrying approximately 20 Indian sailors. Although all crew members were successfully rescued, the repeated nature of these attacks has intensified fears regarding the security of international shipping routes.

Indian authorities have expressed deep concern over the safety of its nationals working as seafarers on commercial ships operating in these high-risk waters. The government has reiterated the need for urgent measures to ensure maritime protection and prevent further loss of life in the region.

The escalating frequency of such incidents has placed renewed scrutiny on existing maritime security arrangements and underscored the vulnerability of civilian shipping in geopolitically sensitive waters.

The situation continues to develop, with diplomatic and security channels between India and the United States remaining actively engaged as investigations and assessments proceed.
